Saint Alphonsus

St. Alphonsus, Bridgetown, Nova Scotia

The faith was established in Bridgetown in the early 17th century, when Acadian farmers settled lands as far up the river as paradise. A Mass House - St. Lawrence Church - was built at present day Upper Granville, and was a Mission of the parish at Port Royal - Annapolis Royal. This church was destroyed by the British in 1736.

The present church as completed in 1874, largely through the efforts of Mrs. Issac Bonnett. In 1986 the present church was moved onto a new foundation, expanded, and a parish hall built in the basement. All carpentry and electrical work has been done by the parishioners themselves. There is a very active Pastoral Council, Ladies' Auxilliary, Religious Education and RENEW Programs.

The church in this area has always been served by the priests of Annapolis Royal.
