St. Thomas

St. Thomas, Shelburne, Nova Scotia

Served very occasionally by transient priests, it was not until 1880 that, the generous assistance of Father Walsche and other friends in Halifax, the handful of Roman Catholics in Shelburne were able to build themselves a small church, which was completed in August, 1881. In 1887, Fr. J.J. Sullivan, of West Pubnico, accepted the charge of Shelburne church and in 1910 it became a Mission of the new Parish of East Pubnico

In 1927, Father O. Bellefontaine became Pastor and instituted monthly Masses and the late Fr. Louis Comeau, became Pastor in 1941 and provided weekly masses.

In 1956, St. Thomas became a Parish and Rev. Fr. Clarence Thibeau the first Pastor. The church was doubled in capacity and a Rectory built. In 1965, the sides of the church were extended and the church took its present form.
